This 2019 edition of the 1942 classic offers far more than an account of unusual physical mediumship. It also presents in-depth explanations from the spirit guide, Peter, who describes how such phenomena are produced on their side of life, alongside broader reflections on birth, death, and the continuation of human consciousness. At the heart of these communications lies a single aim: the spiritual awakening of humankind.
For more than 170 years, those in the spirit world have sought to show that life does not end at physical death. Reports of extraordinary activity through physical mediums—and profound teachings delivered through trance mediums—have appeared time and again. This book belongs firmly within that legacy, yet it offers something richer: a thoughtful exploration of what spirit can accomplish when they work with committed and open-minded individuals.
Divided into three sections, the book begins with the remarkable phenomena—such as materialisation—experienced through the mediumship of Arnold Clare. Part Two moves into conversation with the communicating spirit, who explains the principles behind their work. Readers learn about the Ether that surrounds all life, the many planes of existence, and how these subtle conditions may be shaped and influenced. With the scientific knowledge of the 1940s still limited, some explanations could go only so far. One might ask whether, in light of modern developments such as quantum physics, more of these ideas could be better understood today.
Though written over eighty years ago, the book speaks powerfully to the present. Many still live so firmly rooted in the material world that the deeper spiritual message—first expressed two millennia ago—remains neglected. In Part Three, Peter discusses our entry into physical life, our transition into spirit, and emphasises that their purpose is not to replace the foundations of Christianity, but to remind humanity of the need for genuine “Brotherhood.” As he states: “All life is one unity. I am part of your life; your life is part of mine. And while one part of the whole suffers, the entire body suffers with it.”
