In 2004, Janis Heaphy Durham’s world was upended when her husband, Max Besler, died from oesophageal cancer at the age of fifty-six. As she struggled to rebuild her life in the months that followed, odd disturbances began to intrude into her home—lights behaving erratically, doors that seemed to open or close without a draft, and clocks that repeatedly stalled at 12:44, the precise moment Max had died. At first these incidents were unsettling; soon, they became impossible to ignore.
Then, on the first anniversary of Max’s passing, something occurred that defied every rational explanation: a delicate, powder-like handprint appeared on her bathroom mirror. No one could have placed it there. Even more extraordinary, similar prints materialised again on the second and third anniversaries. It was as though a presence was reaching across an unseen boundary.
Perplexed yet compelled, Janis embarked on a long and searching enquiry into what these events might mean. Her journey took her to scientists, researchers, spiritual practitioners and thinkers from many traditions. Through their insights—and through her own continued experiences—she came to understand that the division between this world and whatever lies beyond is far thinner and more permeable than she had ever suspected. Above all, she discovered that love endures, and that it is the force capable of spanning even the veil between life and death.
