Meister Eckhart, the eminent mystical writer and philosopher, conveyed his teachings in two complementary forms. His Latin works present his ideas with scholarly clarity and analytical rigour, while his German (vernacular) writings – comprising sermons, talks, and shorter treatises – reveal a more personal, contemplative voice. It is within these vernacular pieces that we find his most celebrated mystical insights, exploring themes such as spiritual poverty, the inner birth of Christ, and the awakening of the soul to divine reality.
This volume brings together, in full, all of Meister Eckhart’s vernacular works, rendered into English by Maurice O’C. Walshe. Newly edited and introduced with a thoughtful foreword by Bernard McGinn, one of Eckhart’s foremost modern interpreters, this collection offers the definitive and most authoritative edition of his German writings.
