Scarlett Lewis’s son, Jesse, was one of the 26 children and staff members who lost their lives in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. Nurturing Healing Love shares the extraordinary story behind the message of hope, courage, and compassion that Jesse left for his family shortly before his passing.
Scarlett recalls:
“Some weeks after Jesse’s physical death, I came across a message he had written on our kitchen chalkboard. It was unmistakably his handwriting — the rounded, careful letters of a six-year-old — placed exactly at the height he could reach. Phonetically, he had written: ‘Norurting helin love’ — ‘Nurturing healing love’. Neither his babysitter, who was with him every afternoon, nor his brother or I had seen him write it. The moment you read those words, you sense something far greater at work — a message from Jesse’s spirit, determined to offer comfort, guidance, and strength to us and, in time, to the wider world.
JT later discovered another note from Jesse tucked away in his room, folded into a tiny square. In Jesse’s neat, deliberate print were the words: ‘Have a lot of fun.’ It was so like him — encouraging his older brother, who could sometimes take life rather seriously, to remember joy. JT treasures that message; it is a lasting reminder of Jesse’s love and thoughtfulness.
Faced with unimaginable loss, I made a conscious decision to choose love and forgiveness. The compassion shown by our community, by people across the country, and by countless strangers around the world demonstrated that even in moments of profound darkness, humanity can unite in kindness. I truly believe this tragedy has prompted many to re-examine their lives and choose a gentler, more loving path.
Every morning we are presented with a choice: will we live in fear, or in faith? As we move through the world — a world where good and evil are present every day — it falls to each of us to bring light forward. We do this through our thoughts, our intentions, and every interaction we share. Love, expressed consciously and consistently, is how we begin to heal the world.”
