In 1994, Annie Wilder and her children settled into a century old house in a historic town along the Mississippi River. Although it was attractive and full of character, there was an uneasy atmosphere about it. The property had stood unsold for six months, and it soon became obvious that something within the house was not quite right.

The narrative focuses on a striking Victorian home that seems to serve as a doorway between the living world and something beyond. In House of Spirits and Whispers, the Wilder family develop a strange and ongoing connection with the spirit of the former owner, an elderly man called Leon.

Over the course of ten years, Wilder recounts a series of unsettling and unexplained happenings, including mysterious sounds from the radiators and encounters with various unseen presences. The book offers a personal account of her life inside a house shaped by paranormal activity.
